One of the core objectives of Data without Boundaries is to promote the use of integrated official statistics in Europe. The Data without Boundaries project seeks to inform the research community on possibilities for application and the potential for social enquiry of official European microdata.
To this aim Data without Boundaries, in cooperation with Eurostat, organises a series of three-day training courses on integrated Eurostat datasets. Courses provide information on available microdata in Europe as well as ways to access these data.
The fifth course focussed on Integrated European Census Microdata (IECM), which currently disseminates census microdata of more than 55 samples from 19 European countries, totaling over 100 million person records. The training was hosted by Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Other partners involved in this course were GESIS‐Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences (Mannheim), Réseau Quetelet (Paris) and INSEE‐Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (Paris).
The course aimed at post graduate and senior researchers from throughout Europe who are seeking to conduct research on the basis of European census microdata. Besides highlighting the legal and administrative aspects of data access, the course demonstrated the possibilities of the IECM in a hands‐on computer session which explored the potential for both international as well as longitudinal analysis.
The course took place in Barcelona, Spain, from the 21st to the 23rd of January 2015 and consisted of the following parts:
- Part I: Overview of European Data from Official Statistics
- Part II: Introduction to IECM
- Part III: Practical Training Session
